Facts and FAQ about how acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine work

Below you'll find facts, FAQ and important information about the art and science of acupuncture (herein also termed Chinese medicine)- how it works.

Almost every person who attends my clinic for treatment wants to know the facts. Patients would always ask: "does it work?" A second question would immediately follow: "how does it work?"

When I started consulting professionally 21 years ago, I used to just say it works very well indeed’.

As you can imagine, that answer was acceptable decades ago but nowadays we know a lot more about how it really works in western medical scientific terms. Keep in mind that acupuncturists have known for 2,000 years how it works, but only by using Chinese medical theory.

Does acupuncture work?

Side effects: are there any?

During treatment, you will have some very fine sterile needles inserted into specific points on your body in order to restore the normal functioning of your mind, body and emotions.

Therefore, you should know if there are going to be any side effects. Here is a link that tells you more about side effects.

Alternative therapy?

Rather than traditional Chinese medicine being considered as an "alternative" therapy, I prefer the term "complimentary" medical therapy instead.

The reality is that today TCM is being used as an adjunct to other therapies, mainly Western pharmaceutical medicine. This means TCM doctors are more aware of drug interactions, especially in the field of Chinese herbal medicine.

Traditional Acupuncturists as alternative medicine or complimentary medicine practitioners include a number of important techniques that are still used today. These techniques have been found to be very effective.

In order for you to get better results, find out about the other techniques that MUST be used by your acupuncturist.

Differences between Chinese medicine and western medicine

Is there really a difference between Chinese Medicine and Western medicine?

Yes, there are many differences. Here is an article that tells you the important differences between Chinese medicine and other medical systems.

The TCM doctor: holder of a unique expertise

During your session, your acupuncturist will manipulate the needles in a certain way in order to get results.

There are many techniques that these doctors of traditional medicine will use to achieve results. The techniques are poetically described, such as Fire burning mountain, Cool penetrating the sky or Cool as a summer's evening, Dragon and Tiger locked in battle...

The job of a good acupuncturist however is to do more than simply treat the symptoms. These doctors make it work individually for YOU. Here is a link that tells you exactly how we make Chinese medicine work for you.

Treatment

And now...the specialist at work.

While specifically treating both the cause and symptoms of illness, I place special emphasis on the treatment of the whole person. This ensures that you do not become of secondary importance to the condition which you present on the day of your treatment. Here's how to find out how Chinese medicine helps you so well and why.
