Acupuncture Chinese medical diagnosis of Blood Stasis in infertility

Blood stasis in acupuncture and Chinese medical diagnosis of infertility should be considered.

Apart from acyesis (inability to conceive) long after marriage, the distinguishing features are:

  • Irregular cycles, infrequent periods, prolonged menstrual cycle or delayed menstruation which is scarce, purplish dark in colour, and mixed with blood clots, accompanied by abdominal pain and tenderness

  • Spotting
  • Dysmenorrhea with lower abdominal pain that is relieved after the passage of the clots
  • Possibly fixed abdominal mass (or masses), a history of polyps, fibroids, tumours or endometriosis
  • History of blocked tubes, ovarian cysts, pituitary tumours
  • Dark or purple tongue or tongue with dark or purple spots
  • Pulse is wiry, thready
  • Pelvic inflammation is often found in gynaecological examination

The treatment principle in Chinese medical gynaecology is to invigorate the blood, dispel stasis and regulate the menses.

Formulation of an individual Chinese herbal prescription is based on a preparation that will incorporate gynaecological formula such as:

- Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang with aspects of other formulas such as those seen in

- Tao Hong Si Wu Tang (for mild Blood stasis) or

- Tong Jing Wan (for more severe Blood stasis).
