Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine key signs and symptoms of Phlegm-Dampness Retention in infertility

In the treatment of infertility, Phlegm-Damp Retention in Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine usually occurs secondary to other conditions. Apart from acyesis (inability to conceive) long after marriage, the distinguishing features are:

• delayed or irregular menstruation which can be scanty ( in severe cases even reduced to amenorrhoea) or with a thick mucousy flow

• Overweight or or obese patient, sensation of bodily heaviness

• Cysts, including polysystic ovarian disease, fibroids, blocked tubes, pituitary tumour

• Profuse and viscid leucorrhea (vaginal discharge)

• No fertile mucus or thick yellow mucus

• Pale complexion

• Dizziness

• Palpitations, full sensation in the chest

• Nausea

• Tongue coast is greasy and may be with or creamy yellow coating

• Pulse is slippery

The treatment principle in Chinese medicine is to Transfrom Phlegm, Dry Damp, Regulate the Qi to readjust menstruation.

Formulation of an individual Chinese herbal prescription is based on a preparation that will incorporate gynaecological formula such as

• Qi Gong Wan, with others such as

• Wen Dan Tang

• You Gui Wan

• Chai Hu Shu Gan Tang ( if liver qi stagnation is present)

• Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (if Qi-blood dual deficincy is present)
