Acupuncture Chinese medical diagnosis of Complications and Mixed Syndromes in infertility treatment

The clinical reality with today’s couple in the acupuncture and Chinese medicine clinic is this: they often present with Mixed Syndromes; for example, in patients with a Deficinent Type presentation, a combination of Kidney Essence deficiency with Qi-Blood dual deficiency is common. This picture also correlates with hormonal imbalances.

The key signs and symptoms are fatigue, weakness, low back pain, pale tongue, weak pulse. There is also a prior history of miscarriage, or threatened miscarriage.

Other couples present with a mixture of Excess and Deficiency patterns, especially in women with structural abnormalities that prevent ovulation or implantation. A combination of Qi stagnation and Blood stasis with Kidney Essence and Blood deficiency can be expected.

Some of the key signs and symptoms are Irregular (infrequent) periods, dysmenorrhoea, purple patches on tongue, wiry and uneven pulse.

Complications are usually present. So the cause of infertility will need to be established early in the treatment course. For example, if you are having problems with ovulation, we should investigate the possibility of a mixture of presentation that would best fit the ovulation problem. Usually Kidney Yin deficinecy, Heart Qi stagnation, Liver Qi stagnation, Phlegm Dampness retention or even Blood Stasis can all be present. Therefore, succecss depends on the skill and experience of the acupuncturist.

Similarly with IVF, such as problems of embryo implantation, a combinaiton of Kidney Yang deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation, Phlegm Dampness retention or Blood Stasis can be present.
