Weight Loss with Acupuncture
and Chinese herbal medicine

“Is your acupuncture and Chinese herbs any good for weight loss?” Undoubtedly, this is one of the most frequently asked questions in clinic.

"I've tried ear staples too" they say.

And the feedback we always get from most of our weight loss and obesity clients is “I am confused with all the stuff I hear on the news”.

Does this sound like you? So if you are not sure exactly what to do to lose some weight, read on.

Recently and over the past decade there has been a huge amount of conflicting information in the various techniques available for losing weight. And it keeps growing.

The need to maintain an acceptable weight is more important today because we now know for sure that being overweight increases our chances of contracting life threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer or hypertension (high blood pressure). Even IVF and infertility doctors recommend weight loss for infertility treatments.

--------

On the flip side, you’ll also read on the Depression page that cases of depression, mental problems and emotional disorders (all of these can lead to strange behaviours in some people) have been reported with malnourished individuals, those who are underweight, anorexic, or who suffer from bulimia.

--------

Back to weight loss and obesity in acupuncture.

Consider that your life is miserable when you are overweight, you’ll suffer from decreased vitality, poor energy, loss of confidence and self esteem and more…all leading to a loss in your quality of life.

And it is expensive too. Your medical bills will be much higher if you are overweight, further placing more stress on your finances. This is avoidable of course, if you are conscious of the fact that you need to keep your body weight and size down to the recommended level.

And the public health system will do better too; they’ll be able to cope better with life threatening conditions that could not have been prevented. Just think of that for a moment... Put yourself in that dangerous position... (I’ll wait right here.)

In the battle against the bulge, many have enrolled in expensive fitness programmes and dietary regimes, often resulting in quick short term loss…only to regain and put on more weight after.

And you have also been inundated with diet and appetite suppressant drugs, newly published diet and fitness guides, low calorie frozen foods and others...all promising that you'll lose a lot of weight quickly and easily.

Now you know that the "quick and easy" promise is a blatant lie, yet many of us fall for it!

Many people have been disappointed through their encounters with the weight loss yoyo and have turned to acupuncture and Chinese herbs for help. We'll call it traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) from here.

Why TCM? Because it tells us what humans have been doing for thousands of years, and continue to do so to solve this problem.

Western orthodox medicine considers obesity as the accumulation of excess fat in the body due to over-eating. Obesity may also be due to digestive, metabolic, or hormonal failures. In some cases the cause may be congenital. Dietary adjustment with some form of exercise is offered. In hopeless cases, procedures such as stomach stapling or fat suction are performed.

But does it cure the problem permanently?

You know it doesn't...it does not help you maintain permanent stable body weight.

So on this website, you’ll receive valuable, timeless, advice that will help you succeed in weight loss. You’ll learn about techniques that have been “tried and true” for generations. So be prepared to read on and follow the links.

Here are three important components to treatment. They will influence the results you get with acupuncture.

1. Exercise

2. Food Management.

You'll also need to read about Chinese Food Therapy.

3. Behaviour Modification

Once these are understood, they should be implemented in your treatment plan.

The tips are from the files of my clients, all the successful ones, over the entire 21 years of practice. They are the best tips. They are very easy to implement and once you fully understand what you have to do, you’ll lose weight.

Although the principles of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine agree with the West’s for weight loss, our theory is different and unique. TCM considers obesity as a physiological and/or pathological disorder due to the imbalance of Yin and Yang function in the body. A holistic medicine that involves a complete system of medicine, TCM is very much an “individual’s” medicine. With us, treatment of weight loss includes acupuncture, herbs, and food therapy, breathing exercises, musculo-skeletal exercises and meditation such as Chi Kung (Qi Gong). These therapies can be performed singularly or in concert with one another.

The acupuncturist or Chinese medicine doctor should complete a thorough investigation of your physical, emotional and mental state, and then prescribe the most appropriate single or combination therapy for you. Rarely would the same treatment be repeated for another patient.

My clinical experience with weight loss is this: obesity is not the only result of dietary disorders, but many other disorders resulting from obesity act as a catalyst to the promotion of obesity itself.

With dietary disorders, an undesirable positive feed-back mechanism begins. This creates an increase in the incidence of obesity as well as an increase in dietary disorders. For example, the TCM pathological condition of “excess phlegm” the substance that results from dietary disorders such as excess fried and greasy foods, accumulates in the body when excessive amounts of greasy and fried foods are consumed.

Accumulated phlegm, in my experience, is the leading diagnosis. It leads to fire in the Stomach, a pattern in TCM which is manifested through the symptom of unsatisfied hunger. This in turn leads to increased obesity.

Now keep in mind that phlegm is not the only pathology in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for weight loss and obesity. A TCM doctor will need to do a full diagnosis and assessment of your health before treatment can begin.

I also offer various health workshops, one of them expands on this knowledge. In the "Healthy Body Weight" workshop, I offer a blue print for losing excess weight and maintaining stable body weight permanently. You can Send Me Your Details if you'd like to attend the next workshop.

Good Luck.
